Weight loss vs. fat loss

With the purpose of losing weight, it is necessary for the body to burn greater amounts of calories than it consumes, but it should be remembered that the body requires calories for energy and during exercise the body requires even greater amounts of calories.

Weight Loss Differs from fat Loss

  • The fundamental thing that has to be borne in mind is that losing weight and losing fat is not similar.
  • Simply because an individual loses weight, it does not imply that fat will be lost as a result, and merely since a person loses fat, it does not imply that weight will be lost in the process.

When people refer to the concept of losing weight, what the actually mean is to get rid of the surplus fat on their body and acquire a beautiful figure. When a person eats, the body uses the major portion of the calories for energy. If a person consumes greater amounts of calories than the body makes use of, it will get accumulated as fat. If a person does not eat sufficient quantities of calories everyday he will lose weight, but at the same time energy will be lost as well. When one does not use up sufficient energy (calories) for the body, it will begin to utilize the energy stores to compensate for the energy shortage. However, the energy supplies utilized are not the fat that is stored, but in its place it’s protein and carbohydrates (carbs) that will make available the majority of the energy (accumulated fat constitutes a very minor percentage).

The body will obtain the protein together with carbohydrates from the muscle cells; resulting in the reduction of the muscle mass which compels the metabolism to reduce. When metabolism is low there is little or no burning of fat. When this occurs the body needs smaller quantities of energy to preserve its new reduced body weight, hence the body preserves energy by reducing the rate of metabolism. This implies that the body has adjusted to the new lower energy (calorie) consumption which signifies that a person will no more keep on losing weight.

It should be remembered that the weight one had lost initially was typically water weight and one will in due course acquire it back in the shape of fat, not muscle. When carbohydrates and protein that are previously in the body are utilized as the source of energy, the body will shed water weight since both carbohydrates and protein contain water within the cells. In fact, one is dehydrating oneself to get rid of weight.

It is vital to remember that exercising while taking fewer calories could be detrimental for the health. This is due to the fact that while exercising, an individual begins burning off greater amounts of energy and greater the workout, the body requires more energy.
