Calorie is a unit of energy. It is generally associated with food but it applies to anything that contains energy.

One calorie is the amount of energy or heat taken to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water to 1 degree Celsius. One calorie is equal to 4.184 joules, Which is a common unit of energy used in the physical sciences.

Most of us measure the energy levels of anything in the form of calories in relation to food. The calories that we talk about in general terms actually means Kilocalories that is 1000 calories. A single food calorie contains 4,184 joules.

The same can be applied to exercise, when we say that we burn around 100 calories then it actually means 100 kilocalories.

The number of calories in the food is a measure of how much energy that food possesses. A single gram of carbohydrates has 4 calories, a gram of protein has 4 calories, and a gram of fat has 9 calories. Most foods are a combination of these building blocks. So incase you know how many carbohydrates, fats and proteins are there in your food, you will know how many calories, or how much energy, that food contains.

Our bodies "burn" calories in the food through metabolic processes. Enzymes then break the carbohydrates into glucose and other sugars and the fats into glycerol and fatty acids and proteins into amino acids. These molecules get transported through the bloodstream into the cells, where they get absorbed for immediately or are sent to the final stage of metabolism in which they react with oxygen to release energy.
